Institution:
Northeastern University, Boston, MA
Date:
December 14, 2022
Instructor:
Professor Barbara Mitchell
Academic Overview:
The “The Moche Cognizance Leadership Model Defined” assignment was a signature assignment for the LDR 6100 course, “Developing Your Leadership Capability.” The course focused on enhancing leadership skills and understanding various theories and practices. The goal was to develop a comprehensive personal leadership model by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical insights gained throughout the course.
Learning Objectives:
* Differentiate between various leadership styles and models.
* Develop a personalized leadership model that reflects individual
strengths and values.
*Understand the importance of psychological safety, emotional intelligence, and authenticity in leadership.
* Explore adaptive, transformational, and extraordinary leadership
theories.
*Apply leadership theories to real-world scenarios and personal
experiences.
Key Concepts and Learnings:
1. Leadership vs. Bosses:
* Initially, I perceived leadership as merely holding a position of power.
However, the course taught me that authentic leadership involves
coaching, guiding, and inspiring others rather than simply
supervising them.
2. Psychological Safety:
* Creating an environment where team members feel safe to express
their ideas without fear of ridicule or shame is essential. This concept
aligns with adaptive leadership, which fosters a supportive space for
innovation and problem-solving.
3. Emotional Intelligence:
Emotional intelligence (EI) is crucial for effective leadership.
Understanding and managing one's emotions and empathizing with
others enhances communication and team dynamics.
4. Authenticity:
* Authentic leadership involves being genuine, consistent, and
transparent. It builds trust and loyalty among team members, as
illustrated by historical examples like Colonel Chamberlin from the
Gettysburg video.
5. Adaptive Leadership:
* Adaptive leadership empowers employees, encourages critical
thinking, and gives a voice to marginalized groups. Fundamental
principles include "getting on the balcony" to gain perspective and
"protecting voices from below."
6. Transformational Leadership:
Transformational leaders inspire and motivate followers to achieve
extraordinary outcomes. They set a positive example and foster a
culture of excellence.
7. Extraordinary Leadership:
* This concept introduced me to the idea that leaders can transcend
good and bad to become extraordinary by being present, supportive,
and encouraging continuous growth.
8. Path-Goal Theory:
* This theory focuses on setting clear goals and supporting
employees in achieving them, fostering development and innovation.
Personal Leadership Model:
The course led to creating my leadership model, the Moche Cognizance Leadership Model, which integrates elements from adaptive, transformational, extraordinary, and authentic leadership theories. This model emphasizes:
* Adaptive Leadership: Creating a supportive environment, promoting diversity and inclusion, and ensuring psychological safety.
* Extraordinary Leadership: Inspiring continuous growth and development for myself and my team.
* Transformational Leadership: Empowering others to achieve great things and fostering a culture of excellence.
* Authentic Leadership: Being genuine and transparent in all interactions.
Application and Impact:
Applying these concepts has transformed my approach to leadership. I now strive to:
* Foster a safe and inclusive work environment.
* Lead with empathy and emotional intelligence.
* Inspire and empower my team to reach their full potential.
* Remain authentic and transparent in my leadership practices.
Conclusion:
This assignment underscores the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge with practical insights to develop effective leadership models. The insights gained from this project will be instrumental in my future leadership and organizational development endeavors. It highlights my commitment to continuous learning and improvement, and my ability to develop strategies that promote effective leadership and organizational success.
